How to Repair Common Furnace Problems

Furnaces can break down even with proper maintenance. If that happens, you’ll need to call in heater repair professionals. They’ll help you prevent the complete breakdown of your furnace.

Before calling the pros for heating repair, you can do simple troubleshooting steps on your own when the heater malfunctions. Here are some troubleshooting tips you can do before calling the professionals:

  • Check the Filter
Clogged and dirty filter impedes heating and air flow, making the indoor air quality poor. Dirty filters can prevent the furnace from working efficiently, too. If possible, check your filter every 30 days.
  • Check the Thermostat
After checking the filter, inspect the thermostat next. It should be far away from other heat sources to avoid false readings, which may result in you calling in a professional for water heater repair. Also, see if it needs new batteries.
  • Check the Furnace Flame
Inspect the furnace flame and see if it is a healthy blue color with a small yellowish tip. Otherwise, call a professional for gas leak repair. Never attempt to troubleshoot this on your own.
  • Secure Front Panel
Many people think that they need furnace repair for this. But they don’t have to. Just secure the access panel according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Check the Pilot Light and Gas Valve
If the furnace flame is out, relight it. Follow the owner’s manual when doing so. Also, turn off the gas first for 15 minutes before you attempt to reignite the gas water heater. Call the professionals if you still smell gas even after turning the furnace off for several minutes.
